Automated delivery services sprang up during China’s Covid-19 lockdown

Retail technologies at Smart Retail Expo (SRE 2020)

In response to the Covid-19 outbreak, China’s retail giants JD.com and Meituan both deployed their smart deliver robots/vehicles in heavily locked down cities, such as Wuhan and Beijing. Insiders believe automated delivery technology will be the game changer for China’s post-outbreak retail industry.

JD.com has been testing its delivery robots since 2017. These smart, self-driving robots are able to avoid obstacles, read traffic lights, plan paths, change lanes, park on the right spot, and etc. Minutes before it reaches its destination, a message will be sent to remind the users to pick up their order. It’s estimated that these robots’ daily delivery capacity is 5-10 times higher than that of an average deliveryman.

Meituan’s delivery vehicles were first tested in closed business parks in 2018, and this is their first open-road trial. Originally designed for takeout delivery, the vehicles have been modified to deliver fresh produce, too. It can carry up to 100kg of groceries and drive for 100km. Users can place order on Meituan App, where there are currently over 2000 products for you to choose from.

Besides retail, automated deliver technology has played an important role in hospital settings as well.
