TOSHIBA TEC Europe, a leading retail and industrial automation solutions provider, integrated biometric data identification in its flagship retail management solution storeMate POS for German retail conglomerate EDEKA.
TOSHIBA TEC expanded its storeMate POS management system with a fingerprint-based payment system from IT Werke Technology GmbH as part of a continuous improvement program to offer retail customers maximum convenience and to eliminate card fraud.
DigiPROOF is a biometric identification and authorisation system for payment and loyalty purposes. The customer approves payment with his fingertip instead of the usual credit or debit card. The digiPROOF payment system acts a virtual loyalty card or credit card and handles the electronic payment transaction at the Point of Sales.
In the development of biometric identification systems, physical and behavioral features for recognition are required which:
- are as unique as possible, that is, an identical trait won't appear in two people: Uniqueness
- occur in as many people as possible: Universality
- don't change over time: Permanence
- are measurable with simple technical instruments: Measurability
- are easy and comfortable to measure: User friendliness
“In order to perform recognition tasks at the level of the human brain 100 million computations per second are required. POS systems are today able to reach this calculation speed, and at the same time, the sensors required to measure traits are becoming affordable,” Joachim Jaeger, Division Manager, Professional Services, TOSHIBA TEC Europe said. “Therefore, the time has come to replace the password with a more user friendly solution -- biometric authentication.”
With TOSHIBA TEC storeMate POS, retailers are turning their IT systems into engines for innovation through the use of Web-based services. Many in the industry are therefore using storeMate’s .NET connectivity to enhance customer experience, connect with business partners, cut costs and get more value out of data stores.
