Bonfire Night is Christmas for Burglars
Under the cover of darkness, and with the distraction of firework explosions, thousands of homes across the UK will risk offering an open invitation to burglars on 5th November, according to ADT, the UK’s leading home security provider. Burglaries are predicted to increase in homes by over 20% (1) at this time of year and ADT is urging people to take a few extra minutes to think about home safety before stepping out to enjoy the excitement of roman candles, rockets and sparklers this Bonfire Night.
Mark Shaw, General Manager for Residential Business at ADT Fire and Security, said: “Bonfire Night can be like Christmas Day for burglars, with many homes guaranteed to be empty as we gather to enjoy fireworks displays. The majority of residential burglaries are opportunistic and we know that by taking a few simple measures people can help to make their homes less of a target to predators.”
To help keep your property safe, ADT’s security experts urge you to follow these three steps before leaving home this Guy Fawkes:
- Use timer switches to make your home look occupied after dark
- Put all valuables out of sight and make sure outbuildings, sheds and garages are secure
- If you are holding your own firework display or bonfire in your garden, ensure your front door and windows are locked to help keep burglars out
Shaw continued: “Research shows that 84% of burglars avoid targeting properties with an alarm system (2). Monitored alarms with visible bell boxes, like ADT’s vibrant yellow bell boxes, are a great deterrent and provide cost effective, all year round security, so it’s well worth considering investing in one of these too.”
