TouchStar Technologies Ltd., a Belgravium Technologies PLC company and specialists in the design, supply and support of rugged mobile devices has published the results of its first annual 'State of the Union' survey for mobile computing.
The multiple choice survey was commissioned by TouchStar in April 2014 and was designed to gather valuable insight into the current mobile computing market place and gain user opinion on future trends and requirements for hardware and software. Completed by decision makers and influencers from across a broad range of vertical markets including oil & gas, retail, aviation, logistics and field service, the survey illustrates some interesting trends regarding the state of the mobile computing market place.
A quarter of respondents revealed that their organisation is planning a major investment in IT or mobile computing in the next three years, while a further 40% indicated that a pilot project was being contemplated within the same time period. The survey indicates that the majority of this investment will be seen in the oil & gas, utilities and field service markets where mobile workers are most prevalent.
For those considering new purchases in the next three years, the majority will be investing in combined hardware and software solutions, while a small proportion claimed to be looking at software only and less than 10% indicating that their purchase would be hardware only.
A staggering 82% of participants claimed that they were likely to pilot or invest in consumer grade mobile computing hardware including smartphones and tablets. Of these, 28% said that they would also evaluate rugged handheld terminals. Surprisingly, rugged tablets were the form factor least likely to be considered for deployment within the organisation.
"The insight that we have obtained through the execution of this survey has been fed back into our business and will be used by our management teams to inform the future development of our mobile computing solutions, so that our customers may continue to enhance their mobile working capabilities," commented Mike Turner, Group Marketing Manager, TouchStar Technologies.
