The new 20 Euro banknote from the new Europa series will reach retailers all over the Euro region soon. This is the third step in a seven-step process of replacing all Euro banknotes.
The ECB and the national banks of the Euro system releases the new series of banknotes to enhance the security and maintain public confidence in the currency.
The first two steps in the rollout, the release of the 5 and 10 Euro banknotes, have already been completed and now it is time for the 20 Euro bill. The official unveiling of the new 20 Euro banknote will be hosted by the president of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi. It is held at the central bank in Frankfurt am Main, Germany on February 24.
Banknotes are highly sophisticated products and it takes years of research and development to produce new ones. The new series is named Europa after the figure from the Greek mythology. She was the daughter of a Phoenician king and was seduced by the god Zeus, in the shape of a bull. The story later inspired the ancient Greeks to use “Europe” as a geographical term and now the new banknotes will feature her portrait. The notes have higher security features and are more durable than the old ones. They will not need to be replaced as quickly which reduces their environmental impact.
