Japan: Consumers switched on to LED celling lights

LED technology is shining bright in Japan, accounting for over half of all celling light sales in March 2012. These products have experienced rapid growth in the aftermath of the Great East Japan earthquake, with energy efficient appliances performing particularly well.

Impressive sales value growth for LED celling lights

Last year, manufacturers launched a broad range of LED lights and retailers have devoted more shelf space to them. As a result, LED celling lights have seen a remarkable increase, with their unit sales share soaring from 2.9% in March 2011 to 50.1% in March 2012. In terms of value, there was a notable rise of 64.1% over the same period of analysis. This is the first time sales of LED celling lights have exceeded fluorescent celling lights in both units and value.

Strong start to 2012

In 2011, the overall celling light market, which has been flat for several years, experienced a double digit year on year growth thanks to the growing demand for LED products.

This upward trend has continued in 2012. Celling light sales in March rose by 46.7% in units and 108.4% in value compared to the same period of last year.
Energy efficiency and added features drive increases

The popularity of LED celling lights, with an average selling price 3 times higher than fluorescent models, is driven not only by their energy efficient attributes, but also the additional features they offer.

In March, 94% of LED celling lights sold were able to control brightness to several different degrees, which helped save electricity, while 70% allowed consumers to change the color of light.
