Two products made by luminaire manufacturer RZB Rudolf Zimmermann, Bamberg GmbH won over the 38-member jury of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015. With its SIDELITE ROUND FerroMurano mouth-blown glass LED pendant luminaire and its LESS IS MORE linear system, RZB once again proved its design excellence in the most important competition for product design, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

Thanks to its smart technology strategy and excellent design, RZB has already received more than 45 accolades for its product design over the past five years.

The international experts discussed and assessed each of the 4,928 entries from 56 countries. But only the designs that won over the jury with their quality and innovative power were given an award. SIDELITE ROUND FerroMurano and LESS IS MORE from RZB succeeded in convincing the jury members, deservedly winning the sought-after Red Dot seal of quality.

SIDELITE ROUND FerroMurano impressed the prominent jury members with its symbiosis of authentic Venetian glass and extremely efficient "made in Germany" light technology. The centrepiece of the just 15 mm light is a mouth-blown Murano glass cover in four colour versions, which thanks to the LEDs set in the side produces an exceptionally uniform, powerful and gentle light. The direct power supply through the suspension cable makes the luminaire appear delicate and weightless. Helmut Heinrich, who was responsible for the development and design of the luminaires, believes that the collaboration with the glass manufacturer Ferro Murano was a particular honour: "Venetian glassblowing is a craft that remains legendary to this day.

Pioneers of this craft share their expertise only with extreme caution. More than 700 years of expertise, tradition and passion make each of the different coloured glass covers an exceptionally beautiful and unique piece."

LESS IS MORE: As a prime example of how form and function can be successfully combined, the jury was also impressed by the minimalist design and high light quality of theLESS IS MORE range of LED luminaries. Featuring state-of-the-art LED technology, they can be used for powerful and efficient general or accentuated lighting, and the range of sizes and lamps mean they can be used in just about any conceivable situation. Planners and users can select from various luminance levels and colour temperatures, and can obtain the exact type of light diffusion desired via micro-grid and micro prismatic or opal covers. The power supply is practically invisible as it comes directly through the suspension cable, making the luminaires appear even more graceful. RZB Product Designer Helmut Heinrich explains the uniqueness of this award-winning product: "In the combination shown here of high-quality aluminium profile surface and striking crystal glass cover painted white on the inside, the luminaire not only provides soft, indirect upward light and powerful downward lighting, it also makes an extremely strong design statement."

Throughout the world and across different industries, Red Dot is seen as the award for high design quality. The international Red Dot jury bestows the sought-after seal of quality only to those products that stand out clearly from comparable entries thanks to their excellent design.

Professor Dr Peter Zec, Founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award: “For 60 years, the most-respected design experts have been convening every year in Essen to seek out the best designs. This year we had a record number of almost 5,000 entries – a huge amount of work for our jury members, who assessed each individual product, and a special value of the distinction due to the high standard. The laureates of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 have demonstrated exceptionally high achievements and have thus been deservedly successful in the world’s largest design competition.”

The internationally respected product competition will culminate in the Red Dot Gala in Essen on 29 June 2015. The glamorous award ceremony with more than 1,200 guests will be hosted by Professor Dr Peter Zec in Essen’s Aalto-Theater. At the subsequent Designers’ Night after-show party, the winners celebrate into the early hours in the midst of award-winning products in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen. The winning products are then presented for four weeks in the special exhibition “Design on Stage” before being included in the museum’s permanent exhibition.
